I develop the Pricing schedules for the company using historical data when available when it's not available, I can estimate via reading blueprints, bills of material and any other costing tools available. I am currently on loan to the Operations department, and that includes Purchasing, where I'm contacting vendors for pricing of purchased parts, for cost estimating. It's interesting to see the other side of the coin. Funny thing (to me) is that I'm still doing the same job I was hired to do over twenty-five years ago! So then, am I in a rut or do I love doing what I do? It's a blast, really - if anyone wants to get into the field, I'd be happy to talk with them. What other position has so much power over the bottom line? There are always challenges and obstacles that have to be dealt with, but that's part of the game. My video game is Excel! Love it! Estimate sales values for all products in a custom job shop environment.

Manufacturing Engineering, Estimating projects. Hartwell manufactures latching mechanisms for the aircraft industry. I priced parts that went on the F117, the Osprey and, back in the day, on the MD11. I even priced a latching mechanism for special projects, as needed. One project I worked on was one where I overheard the Manufacturing Engineer talking with the NC programmer - I butted in, and gave my two cents - next thing I know, I was heading up the program - my thinking, saved them 1/3 of the material cost for the project - we delivered on time and under budget, thanks to some "out of the box" thinking. The parts were called bins and are used on the 747 aircraft.

I was a Planner/Estimator at Hunter Engineering. This was a pretty cool company that made Aluminum processing equipment. Melting Furnaces, Holding furnaces, Slab Casters, Paint lines, Loopers (Time Accumulators) and all the associated equipment. I enjoyed working in the industry.

I started at Aetna after I got out of the Navy. I started in the Mill as a Turret Lathe operator and in four years, I worked my way through all the machines necessary to become a machinist. Starting with year five, I was promoted into the office where I was a "Router" - and wrote the travelers/work orders/router sheets. I also learned to program the N/C Lathes, Mills, Burning machines and Drill presses. Aetna manufactured Steel processing equipment. From replacement machines to the entire Steel processing plant. Lone Star Steel, for one, has Aetna equipment that I worked on. I totally enjoyed the mill environment and learned a lot about machining and how the process works from raw material to finished goods.
