A physician-scientist by training, and was a faculty member at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center for 11 years, eventually rising to the rank of Associate Professor of Pediatrics – Research with tenure. While at MD Anderson, Hughes ran a successful research laboratory, studying sarcoma metastasis and cancer cell signaling, supervising trainees at all levels, and publishing over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He also wrote successful grants, eventually receiving two NIH R01 awards in the same grant cycle.
