Dennis Irwin became dean of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University in July 2002 and served in that capacity until July 2019. Irwin was chair of the College’s School of EECS from 1997 to 2002. As a faculty member in EECS he was selected as the school's Outstanding Graduate Instructor and Outstanding Undergraduate Instructor three times each. During his tenure as dean, the Russ College received what is still the largest single gift to a public engineering college in the USA, $124M from alumnus Fritz Russ and his wife Dolores. In addition, and also during his tenure, the Russ College was awarded more than $200M in research awards from sponsors such as NASA, the DOE, the DOE, General Electric, ODOT, and several hundred other entities. A registered professional engineer in the state of Ohio since 1989, Irwin currently serves on the nomination and selection committee for the NAE’s Russ Prize, the world’s highest honor in bioengineering. He also serves on the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) board of directors, which in 2012 awarded him the OSPE Uncommon Engineer Award and in 2018 the OSPE Professional Engineering Management Award. He is a fellow of NSPE, an associate fellow of AIAA, and a life senior member of IEEE.He is currently President and was also the 2015-2016 President of OSPE and is a Past-Chair of NSPE’s Professional Engineers in Higher Education Executive Board. During 2019-2020, he served on the NSPE Board of Directors and from 2019-2022 served on the NSPE House of Delegates. He is also a past chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI). From June 2018 to October 2018, he served as Acting President and CEO of OAI.Dr. Irwin has been a faculty member of the International Space University since 1999 and has served as its summer session Space Engineering Department Chair several times. Irwin, who holds a certificate from Harvard University, received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S., all in EE, from Mississippi State University where he was inducted into the honor societies of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu and in 1980 was named to its Engineering Student Hall of Fame. He was a NASA Faculty Fellow in 1988, 1989, and 1990, serving in the control systems division at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.Upon his retirement from Ohio University in July, 2019, he received commendations from the Ohio Senate, the Ohio House of Representatives, and the Russ College Board of Visitors.
