The Talon Internship, offered by the American Angus Foundation, pairs recipients with registered Angus cattle operations based upon the intern's experience and career path. I was chosen as one of 4 Talon Interns this year and was paired with a ranch in North Platte, Nebraska called TD Angus, owned by Trey and Dayna Wasserburger. There, I worked as an intern for the ranch during the summer of 2021. As an intern, I was involved in all parts of the cattle operation. As with any ranch, the different seasons of the summer dictated our responsibilities. The beginning of the summer consisted mostly of breeding the cattle on the TD Angus operation as well as other ranches near North Platte which purchased semen during the bull sale. After the breeding season, we transitioned into preconditioning and fall calving towards the end of my time at the ranch. The Angus Foundation also sponsored a trip for the 4 Talon Interns to visit the Angus Foundation Headquarters in St. Joseph, Missouri, and the Certified Angus Beef Headquarters in Wooster, Ohio. During this trip, we toured the headquarters and met with the Board of Directors of both organizations.

This position was a bit of an experiment which greatly helped the company. The CEO wanted to know if college students during the summer could work as efficiently and productively in the lumber yard as their usual middle-aged employees.I was chosen to be in charge of a group of six college students who would rotate and work in various aspects of the lumber yard such as the truss plant, wall plant, and filling customer orders in the yard.During this time, my group of college students were the only employees working in the wall plant, aside from the manager, and we improved production in the wall plant to such a degree that for a period of time we ran out of orders to fill.I gained an abundance of knowledge about the lumber industry and gained valuable management skills overseeing my group of college students.Became proficient working with a large variety of equipment and interacting with customers.Developed a greater work ethic while working 8-15 hour days.

Tasked with many different and unique responsibilities that varied throughout the year.Managed time in order to meet project deadlines. Responsible for special projects and oversaw preparations for events such as the New Mexico State Fair, various leadership conferences, public speaking competitions, and State Conventions.Acquired an NMSU Driver’s license and was responsible for driving vehicles and transporting materials for conventions and other events, all around New Mexico.
