About Derek Beddows

I entered the diving industry in 1976 when as a nineteen year old on a gap year I attended a basic air diving course which provided divers to the pioneering North Sea Industry. This was a time of low regulation and high incidence of injury and fatality.We did not know what we did not know and some friends and colleagues paid the ultimate price.I travelled extensively further developing my diving career to include mixed gas diving (1981) and supervision (LoA 1983).This led to Inspection coordinating + Client Rep work when these roles were still in their infancy.Having developed a broad knowledge across the diving discipline I used my Client Rep role to gain experience in Trenching,Ploughing, Rockdumping,Hyperbaric Welding, Pre-commissioning, Landfall, beachpull etc.This opened doors into main contractors and operators offices + 18 years were spent with McD/ETPM and Technip as a multi disciplined Rep/Lead Engineer and Diving & Subsea Operations Manager.A spell in India as RelianceAllseas DSV Manager/subsea packages installation Manager was followed by Bell Diving Safety Specialist for Husky Energy on Grand Banks.In 2009 I was successful in being selected by BP as their first Global Diving Technical Authority.Over the years I have used many tragic lessons learned from the past to help improve our diving industry.I have held Vice Chair positions on both IMCA and IOGP committees and most recently VC on the N.Sea Operators Diving Committee in Aberdeen.I have written and co-authored many Industry Recommended Practices and Guidance + was the driver behind global saturation diving SPHL/HRF requirements, I also wrote BPs first three Global Diving Practices + was instrumental in COBRA’s first N. Sea utilisation with Bibby. As the Father of a young commercial diver (Lewis) who has had his dreams/career destroyed by diving Supervisor incompetence and diving contractor ineptitude, we must be focused on the continued importance of diving and working safely as OneTeam. We must apply the appropriate pressure to have recompression facilities immediately available at every air and nitrox diving location regardless of depths or weak Regulation.I have now stepped down from BP to both better support Lewis and work with Archer Knight Diving Technical Consultancy to help prevent a similar incident from happening to another young diver, as an Industry, we are not as safe as we think we are nor as safe as we should be.I am now currently supporting several major Clients in Abz + have recently set up The Global Diving Support Network thegdsn.co with Lewis & Co.
