Profile bio

About Derek Lilly

I was a cardiac registered nurse for 28 years. I have experience in Cardiac step down, cardiac ICU, cardiac Cath/EP holding area, advanced electrophysiology, and interventional cardiology for 22 years at the Manhattan VA hospital. This VA is affiliated with NYC School of Medicine and is practicing all up to date cardiac procedures. I love working in a teaching hospital. I have had the opportunity to teach, mentor, and be a preceptor for nursing students from various nursing schools in NYC who do clinical rotations at the VA in Manhattan. I also have experience with surgical clinics and teaching the NYU School of Medicine residents for the past two years. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology as well. I have always had aspirations to be an educator. I love sharing my experiences and knowledge with nursing students. The relationship is a bidirectional learning process that I will always cherish. I have been a natural leader from my early college years. During my undergraduate years at Longwood University I was President of my fraternity and held other leadership positions in the fraternity. During my presidency I successfully recruited young men to double the size of my fraternity. I was a founding member and first president of the National Order of Omega Greek Honor Society chapter on campus. I was awarded one of four National scholarships as well. I was Greek Man of the Year my Senior Year. I learned how to be a leader, mentor, and educator from my years at Longwood University. It shaped me into the man I am today! I went on to Old Dominion University and was President of my Fraternity there as well. Leading them out of financial crisis and left with increased financial stability and increased membership. I was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Golden key, and Sigma Theta Tau Honor Societies at ODU and Columbia. I was a bartender and restaurant manager while attending Longwood and Old Dominion Universities. This taught me interpersonal skills. Living in Manhattan for the past 25 years has been a huge learning experience. I volunteered after 9/11 at ground zero. So 9/11, a blackout, superstorm Sandy, while I was in graduate school at Columbia University, and finally Covid. I bring many life experiences with me.I want to share my life experience with others in a teaching/leadership environment. I am a perfect example of resilience, integrity, and compassion. I have dedicated myself to the service of our Veterans and the people of the United States of America. Thank you for your consideration as I move on to a new chapter in my career and life.

Listed skills include Electrophysiology, Cardiac Cath, Bls, Nursing, and 6 others.
