For the last 12 years in my present educational role I have mainly worked and supported disengaged, excluded, disenchanted and mentally and socially challenged students who have struggled and been oppositional within the mainstream educational system.By valuing and promoting the strength of face to face relationships with students and whanau this has been actioned through home visits or meeting in other community venues where young people feel safe, nurtured and connected. The challenge and joy of this supportive role is in transcending the constrictive and debilitating environment that can be experienced in mainstream schools by some students and reigniting the spark and excitement of learning through owning and having some control over their educational journey. This can happen through a multitude of platforms but essentially the experience of experiential, self discovery learning is at the heart of success for many of these young people.Sharing these avenues and opportunities to grow self confidence, self worth and regain their dignity is of the essence of this educational role with Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu.I have felt it an extraordinary privilege and a humbling life experience to work and support these young people and their support networks of whanau, peers and my professional colleagues.
