About Derek Powell

Born in Scotland and grew up in Glasgow, worked across various retailers in the UK - from Homebase to B&Q as well as cutting my teeth in Fast food restaurant management as a youngster. Decided to emigrated and rightly chose New Zealand in 2006, joining Bunnings shortly after.For the next 18 years worked across various store Leadership roles including Store Manager and then Area Manager roles across all geographic regions from the Far north to the Deep South Island.The last 5 years at Bunnings were spent in the National Operations Manager Role and part of the NZ leadership team responsible for leading a team of 5000 across 50 locations.I joined Mitre 10 NZ in Feb 24 as Head of Network Optimisation - looking at our full country Network Planning, Store and Support cost optimisation projects and opportunities, Store Excellence projects as well as working with the Iconic Hammer Hardware!In Sept 24 stepped into the Chief Customer Officer role, leading the Customer team of Store Support, Trade, Customer Digital and Store Experience and Construction.My Career path target continues to evolve however stays true to my core mission of - Leading within an organisation which has a strong sense of purpose and a vision for the future – strong growth aspirations, a desire to strengthen their brand, customer, community reach or market position. Navigating strategic change, expansion, or consolidation. Not scared to take risks and drive results.Within that environment my key strengths would be utilised to their best. Those being – Authentic, Collaborative, Motivational, Innovative, and Strategic.
