So, LinkedIn has been hassling me to fill in this "About" section. It reminds me regularly and makes me feel a tad unworthy. I'm giving in. But what to say? I know how I don't want to write. I'm not a fan of summaries written in the third person. It feels lazy, like they copied it from some over-polished press release. Or, maybe they did write it, but that's just weird. Thinking about it, the only person I've seen use the third-person approach successfully is Zlatan Ibrahimović, the Swedish superstar footballer. I am not Zlatan. Another option that I will stay well clear of is the tsunami of buzzwords and phrases. It's like the writer is desperate for some recruiter or search-bot to be enticed by their word search and offer them limitless opportunities. I am going to guess that this doesn't happen much.It feels awkward to write words about myself. So, I will sidestep that torture and alternatively share an assessment from an individual who only speaks truth and honesty; my eldest daughter.A while ago, I got my family to try an exercise that, to be clear, they hated. We shared one thing we admired about each other. Things were going well, and it got to the point where my daughter was due to bestow a positive on me. After consideration, she announced that she couldn't think of anything and would have to get back to me. Yes, it was disappointing, but it wasn't totally unexpected. She'd previously likened me to Tom Hanks's character from the film Castaway during the lockdown period; that was a real low.Anyways, there is a happy ending to this story. A couple of days later, she informed me that she'd thought of something. Here is what she said. "You make big, complicated and scary things not feel big, complicated and scary."As compliments go, I kinda like that one. It does feel like me. In my life and career, whether I have been scaling a business, leading change, delivering results, driving innovation, or just simply helping people, this observation is at the core of what I do.For some time now, I have approached life, not as a linear journey, straight or squiggly. But as a series of loops, each starts with something new and ends with healthy disruption and renewal. For me, it's not about perceptions, internal or external. It's about movement and progress. A good friend once shared with me - "It will be all good in the end, and if it doesn't feel good, it just means that it's not the end". So that is my summary. I hope the LinkedIn gods are happy. And, if you have a big, complex and scary thing, then reach out to me. I'll do my best to help.
