Derek Pyle is an affiliated Grammy® Award-Winning trombonist and freelance musician based in Los Angeles, California. Derek completed a BM in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas in 2016 and an MM in Studio Music and Jazz Trombone at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in 2018. A sought-after jazz composer, arranger, educator, and clinician based in Los Angeles, Derek has been regarded as a first-call jazz, classical, latin, pop, rock, funk, and studio trombonist in Dallas, Miami, and Los Angeles for the past 15 years.Derek appears on the Gary Lindsay album "Are We Still Dreaming" (2018) and the Rick Margitza album “Cheap Thrills” (2020) with the South Florida Jazz Orchestra. Derek is featured on the John Daversa Big Band album “American Dreamers,” which received three Grammy® Awards in 2019, including Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. The project was recognized by the LA Times, the Washington Post, CNN, and numerous U.S. politicians, including senators Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Dreamers in 2020. Derek is featured on the John Daversa Big Band album “Improvisatory Observatory” recorded in September 2023 at the world-famous Baked Potato Jazz Club in Studio City and appears as a guest artist and clinician at festivals across the United States.Derek has also held numerous teaching positions in Texas, Florida, and California and remains an outspoken advocate for the arts. Recent students of Derek’s have been accepted to Juillard, the Manhattan School of Music, the Berklee College of Music and have won auditions with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. As a grad student at the University of Miami, Derek was a guest lecturer in Jazz Pedagogy courses, Brass Techniques, and guest conducted the Frost Studio Jazz Band. Derek has been featured since 2012 in an exhibit of the Iowa All-State Music Festival in the Iowa Hall of Pride in Des Moines, Iowa.Derek is a member of the Jazz Education Network, the International Trombone Association, and the American Federation of Musicians. He has been mentioned in publications including Downbeat Magazine, the International Trombone Association Journal, the Jazz Education Network Magazine, and the Brass Herald in London. Derek’s teachers include Rene Bernard, Roger Ingram, Tom Garling, Vern Kagarice, Jan Kagarice, Tony Baker, Steve Wiest, Andre Hayward, Dante Luciani, Chuck Bergeron, John Daversa, Charlie Loper, and Dick Nash. He exclusively performs on Bach trombones and A.R. Resonance mouthpieces made by master craftsman Antonio Rapacciuolo in Torino, Italy.
