About Derek Reddy

"It's amazing how free it is to make someone smile." -GySgt Brown, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, Fox Btry.I have sensed a calling for selfless service since I was a little boy. At a very early age, I knew that God was guiding me along his path. It was so fascinating how it influenced my daily decisions and my character. I remember an activity my 4th-grade teacher had us do where we would list all the careers we wanted to do when we grew up. “Astronaut, lawyer, firefighter, soldier,” I ecstatically shared with my parents and class. It wasn’t until a family friend, a Marine, came into my life and showed me all his awards and told me his stories that I knew that the Marine Corps was my calling. One day, we were walking past a rock climbing area in a mall, and he enthusiastically told me to try it out. I hesitated initially, but he assured me I would be great at it. I scaled this wall up and down with all the energy from those delicious mall treats, and when I came back down, he told me how proud of me he was and that maybe one day I could become a Marine. Little did he know that this experience meant the world to me since I did not have a father figure to look up to. Ever since that moment, I have tried to resemble my idea of a Marine, no matter what I was doing. I took two years after high school to try college and take care of my family before taking that big right step. In May 2016, I stepped off that bus and onto those yellow footprints. Through all of the commotion, I calmly reminded myself that though these Drill Instructors would break me down to the very fabric of my being, I have always lived by this code they would instill in me and that I would excel. In November of 2016, I was meritoriously promoted to E-3 for having the highest GPA in my class in my Artillery School. In only two years and six months of service, I was meritoriously promoted to E-5 and completed two deployments to Okinawa, Japan. Over the past eight years, I have served with some of the best men and women I could have ever had the honor of meeting in my life. I have had the eye-opening privilege of seeing the world and experiencing other cultures. This was quickly the best decision I have made in my life, as it has only reinforced the tenets by which I live. Be respectful; you’ll never have to apologize for it. Love each other; you never know when it could be all gone or what someone is going through. Celebrate and laugh; life is too short. And finally, aspire to be the hero you believe in.
