About Derek Jones
Discovery, story telling, creativity and teaching are in my DNA and I'm fortunate enough to have a career which satisfies all of these while making a significant contribution to the people, brands and organisations that entrust me with their precious cargo.My roots are in Psychology, Art and Music, which has led me to the perfect career of research, presenting, creating and teaching. I love the combination of the scientific method with the power of creativity and believe every business problem is best addressed through a part Science, part Art approach. Add high standards and excellence and you've got the makings of something very special to help clients make better decisions. I founded D&M Research in 1994 after a four year stint at Newspoll, and three years in Policy & Research. In addition to my duties as Principal I maintain an active role in providing research services, bringing all of my 20+ years of experience and knowledge in research and markets to both D&M and our clients. I love to present whether it be for client debriefs, conference papers or university lectures, and I'm often asked to comment on my work in the press. I am passionate about organisations and how they can have a positive impact on the people that make them.I've won my share of industry awards for research effectiveness and conference papers, my favourite of which is for the social research I've done work on what really makes us tick when is comes to choosing a partner of the opposite sex.Outside of the agency I'm a guest lecturer at UNSW School of Marketing, a social researcher, and a volunteer lifesaver at Coogee beach. I am passionate about aesthetics & design, culture, music, the Sydney Swans and of course my family and tribe of kids (3 in all). If I wasn't in Research I would have loved to have been an Architect, Interior Decorator or a Musician. One day I want to take on a grand design project!
