Derrick Mims is currently Director of Government and Community Relations for California State University, Dominguez Hills. In this position, manages advocacy engagement efforts to garner support from the state legislature, the US House of Representatives and Senate, and local governments throughout the South Bay Cities, Gateway Cities, and South Los Angeles. His responsibilities also include building partnerships with industry, community, and civic organizations to enrich the lives of students and residents. Before arriving at CSUDH, Derrick served as Senior Advisor to Congressman Alan Lowenthal in Long Beach. He previously was District Director for elected officials such as Assemblyman Warren T. Furutani and Congresswoman Maxine Waters. He supervised all district staff and carry's out an agenda that strengthens our education system, fights for working families, and offered hope to the underserved. Derrick began his public service work under the tutelage of the late Congressman Augustus F. Hawkins, a well respected and renowned pioneer in public service. Through all of Derrick’s work, chief among his assignments was to tackle impactful matters for communities of color, like educational disparities, job discrimination, low economic development, and environmental issues.He also had the opportunity to work at his alma mater, Los Angeles Southwest College, a predominately African American and Latino community college campus in the urban city. Derrick served as the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement. During his many years at Southwest College, Derrick played a key role in academic programs to increase student achievement, providing student scholarships and establishing community partnerships.
