Desmond Tan Email and Phone Number
I’ve been a commercials Film Director for 18 years and was a Producer and 1st AD before that. I currently run Atypicalfilms - a regional production house based out of Singapore that gathers an eclectic and exciting roster of regional Film Directors to work on commercials, films and content. Passionate about film education for the next generation of practitioners in Singapore, I avail myself to teach, lecture and mentor along the way.I fiercely believe in the power of film for good and and love putting teams and systems in place to create and develop content that entertains AND inspires/ provoke/ cajole/ invigorate. I hate being pigeon-holed and I always try to do something that scares the bejesus out of me. Bringing 20 years of production experience to every project is one thing, but we don't live in the past lest we get overtaken by the present. And so I am committed to always be a student as much as a film practitioner. I also happen to be a stage 4 colorectal cancer survivor. It does not define me, but it certainly shapes how I view time and space and how I spend resources. Very open to talking about and sharing my experience with cancer, treatment, death and insurance.Always happy to chat over kopi o kosong.

Film DirectorKtv Feb 2012 - Jan 2015With the changing landscape of advertising and film, KTV was formed. This was a platform for me to work on other modes and forms of film and ad work whilst continuing to shoot traditional commercial work. I have never been afraid to embark on new things and live by the adage to do something that scares me everyday. For a small shop, we punched way above our weight and shot documentaries, long-form content web content, print work, reality-based films, art pieces, experimental work and epic… Show more With the changing landscape of advertising and film, KTV was formed. Film DirectorKinetic Design And Advertising. Jul 2011 - 2012Spent time here working, learning and being a student again. All within an agency framework and shot lots of crazy fun stuff with some amazingly talented folks (Actually one of the most awarded creatives in Singapore). It was inspiring and non-traditional. It challenged me in so many ways and certainly allowed me to view what I do further up the chain.Having insight from the inside of a multi-awarded agency was both humbling and I really got to experience what it meant to do great work.

Guest LecturerLasalle College Of The Arts 2005 - 2012Absolutely love teaching! I did some guest lecturing over the years at LaSalle College of the Arts as well as at the Singapore Media Academy. Great experiences. As much as I give of myself, I also take in by re-learning the fundamentals and being inspired all over again by the students. -

Line Producer/ Producer/ 1St AdTwo Oceans Film Company 1999 - 2005Fresh out of school and just wanted to work in film. I didn't care where or in what capacity. Ended up working with some of the best producers, directors and DP’s in the industry. Learnt a whole lot and got scolded a fair bit. Was also told to throw whatever I had learnt in school out the window and start over again. Started out looking for a forest. One with a small stream running through it. With dense foliage. But not too much. Oh and I almost died twice in a day. True story… Show more Fresh out of school and just wanted to work in film. I didn't care where or in what capacity.
