At a high level, my role in relation to GST involved:• Compliance - reviewing financial information, preparing Business Activity Statements (BAS);• Advisory - providing advice on the GST treatment of supplies and the entitlement to input tax credits, advising on the GST implications of large transactions and restructuring, and advising on tax minimisation strategies; • Due Diligence - reviewing the past GST compliance of entities, which involves analysing BAS preparation processes, tax treatment, and reported amounts, and identifying any material underpayments or other tax compliance risks. Key aspects: • Assisting in Streamlined Assurance Reviews (SAR), involving the preparation of requests for information, analysis of data, and preparation of the SAR Response; • Assisting in the preparation of Private Binding Ruling (PBR) Requests to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO); • Assisting in the preparation of Voluntary Disclosures to the ATO.My role also involved significant client contact, and I regularly liaised directly with various individuals from more junior staff at smaller companies, to the Tax General Managers at ASX 200 companies.
