Hello! I am Devin Higgins, a graduate from UAA majoring in Mechanical Engineering (minors in Computer Science and Mathematics).In the summers of 2022 and 2023, I was a design engineering intern for Interface Force Measurement Solutions in Scottsdale, AZ. While there, I gained experience with SolidWorks, Scilab, and Excel. In addition, I performed many essential engineering tasks such as compiling ECO packets, creating and/or changing engineering drawings while maintaining GD&T compliance and properly sharing updates to the company database, and communicating effectively with other engineers and managers. During these internships, I took up multiple design projects to improve internal fabrication processes, such as the creation and documentation of a system of parts to guide the alignment of bladders for the pneumatic clamping of strain gages on the interior surfaces of some load cell products.As a student, I was taught to use SolidWorks and ANSYS for CAD and FEA, and I was able to become more proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. I also learned several programming languages in the context of my mechanical engineering education, computer science education, and plasma research. The languages I know are MATLAB, C, C++, Python, SQL, and Linux. In the 2023-24 academic year, I researched plasma confinement in fusion conditions under an undergraduate research apprenticeship funded by the Alaska Space Grant, which is funded by NASA. I gained experience in Python and learned a lot about nuclear fusion. I was able to articulate and present my findings at the annual Alaska Space Grant symposium, which took place in Fairbanks in 2024.In addition, I have been president of UAA's Creative Writing Club since Spring 2021, a mechanical co-lead on the university's robotics team, and a team lead for my capstone project, which entailed an analysis of preventive maintenance practices on the mechanical systems at the Alaska Sealife Center in Seward.I have over 3 years of experience in teaching as a tutor in mathematics (algebra to calculus and beyond), chemistry, and physics. In the process, I have learned to communicate more effectively and diversely when it comes to explaining technical concepts, and I have been able to keep up with evolving curricula and methods of solving problems in the subjects I am qualified to tutor.I passed the FE Mechanical Exam in 2024 and I am eligible for EIT designation in Arizona.
