Profile bio

About Devin Carroll

I have been designing and building things for as long as I can remember. Given a new Lego set, I would lose myself for hours building and imagining different creations. But it wasn’t just Legos, paper, wood, cardboard, I used all of it to build any number of things. It only makes sense then I would tend towards engineering as a profession. When 3D printing started becoming more readily accessible to the everyday consumer, a group of students from my undergraduate teamed up and convinced the university to purchase a single MakerBot printer. We ran this printer for the next two semesters before passing it on to younger students when we graduated. Today, that one printer has transformed into the MIE Innovation Lab which offers students space and the tools to build whatever they can imagine and create. Pursuing a PhD gave me the opportunity to explore the design and prototype space from a nontraditional viewpoint. With Dr. Mark Yim at the University of Pennsylvania, I developed design methodologies for building robots from ice and sticks. Our work aimed to make engineering, design, and prototyping more accessible to the everyday person so that they too can build custom solutions for their unique challenges. Now, as a lecturer at Penn, I get to take my enthusiasm and excitement for designing and building robots and share that with my students every day.
