About Devon Morera, Mph, Ches
In high school, I would spend hours reading about communicable diseases and historical pandemics, with the height of my interest in diseases resulting in me writing a ballad about fighting antibiotic resistant diseases for English class. After starting college, I was able to learn about the actual research practice and health behavior theories that drive public health and knew that this was the career path I was destined to go down. Thanks to a summer fellowship at UNC where I helped conduct the process evaluation for a sexual assault prevention program, and an internship as a health educator at Rice University's Wellness Center, I further honed my interests and discovered my passion for sexual and reproductive health research, education, and sexual violence prevention. After receiving my undergraduate degree, I continued to seek out opportunities in the fields of sexual violence response and prevention and health education. I spent one year as a case worker at a domestic violence shelter, where I answered the shelter's crisis hotline to provide safety planning and crisis intervention. I also directly worked with clients to make sure their needs were met while at the shelter. However, I knew that I wanted to gain more research and program planning skills, and my desire to gain these skills brought me to Columbia University, where I recently finished a Master of Public Health Program. While at Columbia, I was also able to gain more experience as a health educator at Project STAY, where I provided sexual health education to at risk populations. I also worked with The Public Good Projects and Tumblr to successfully increase user engagement with Tumblr's Action Initiative. Now, as a graduate of Columbia I am particular interested in the intersection of sexual and reproductive health, social justice, and new media interventions, and am seeking a career in which I can use my research and health education skills to improve population health.
