About Devon Kerr
I started a career in Observability a quarter-century ago, when my role as a systems administrator led me to a "Dorothy-in-Oz" moment: I discovered a targeted intrusion, and I'd never see Kansas again. At that time the idea sounded like science fiction, but I eventually found a group of folks at Mandiant (once FireEye, now Google) who shared that experience. For the better part of a decade I led dozens of investigations in nearly every vertical and region, and helped some of today's most influential companies develop effective security capabilities. These experiences helped me understand enterprise security challenges at a global scale as I supported clients in the fortune 10-500, as well as governments with their own unique challenges. Towards the end of this phase of my career, I realized that I could only accomplish so much on my own and sought opportunities to extend my reach-- and I found them with Endgame, where we learned disruptive ways to change the status quo in a new R&D capacity. Elastic joined forces with us and adopted a new philosophy: change the threat landscape by actually changing the landscape. At Elastic, I'm responsible for Elastic Security Labs: a unique team of malware analysts, reverse engineers, intelligence analysts, threat hunters, and researchers. Our goals are to democratize access to knowledge and resources, and to weaponize defensive technologies. Democratization is important because, while some threats target practically every living person, the tools for mitigating them are only affordable to a privileged few. And weaponization because creating environments which are hostile to threats directly undermines their goals. Our research is published weekly to www.elastic.co/security-labs/ along with tools and capabilities delivered to the public and directly to Elastic technologies. Find us on X @elasticseclabs
