What does an accountant, an engineer and a ship captain have in common? Everything if you ask me. I’m a former engineer, who went on to become a project manager and then a General Manager – I’m also a qualified accountant. My success has been driven by the fact that I don’t think about engineering problems the same way that I would if I only had an engineering background. By blending my engineering, management and accountancy skills I’ve been able to take on the captain role and overhaul underperforming operations and drive business growth for hi-tech engineering firm across Singapore, China, Middle East and United States. At my core is a strong passion for engineering. As an engineer I was trained to analyse and synthesize workflows, define problems, and find solutions. Moving onto a project manager I excelled at unifying teams and solving complex problems with limited resources. My science training gave me the curiosity and creativity to approach business problems differently and my career progressed quickly. Soon, I was steering the ship and it was my responsibility to identify opportunities for process enhancement and drive continuous improvement. Not only to workflow processes, but to the bottom line. I realised accounting is the language of business and the X factor I was missing so I embarked on my Master of Professional Accountancy. This trifecta of skills is what made it possible for me to reach aggressive targets, strengthen communication among disparate teams and accelerate digital transformation. I’ve been able to successfully guide teams of 200+ employees out of stormy waters and manage budgets exceeding 70Mn USD. So, if you’re looking for someone who is equal parts engineering-minded, people-centric, and numbers focused, I’m the person you are looking for.
