Dominic Hernandez is primarily interested in the application of evolutionary algorithms to spacecraft trajectory design and other challenges found in the field of spacecraft navigation, guidance and control. He has dedicated his master's thesis to the designing of of interplanetary trajectories to Uranus using particle swarm optimization at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Over the time at this institution, he has developed various skills in the field of astrodynamics ranging from multi-body dynamics, statistical estimation of dynamical systems and attitude determination and control. He obtained a B.S. in both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from NMSU. During his undergrad he was heavily involved in the university's nanosatellite research team on a project called SAS-SAT headed by Dr Stochaj. This project was named SAS-SAT which sought to perform several autonomous formation flying scenarios in LEO and attempt an autonomous docking maneuver. Across his time on the project he led the mechanical team and eventually got hired on as the project manager. He holds a deep love and interest for the space field and spent some time as an unofficial research assistant for Dr Moire Prescott where he helped her research on early-galaxy formation by analyzing pictures taken by local telescopes and Hubble of the PRG-1 nebula using Python.
