About Dhruvil Patel

I have a research interest in the intersection of neuroscience, immunology, and cancer. I find the intricate interplay between these three fields of study fascinating and believe that understanding the mechanisms that underlie their interactions could lead to new insights and therapies for a variety of diseases. Specifically, I am interested in studying the role of the immune system in the development and progression of neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis, as well as in cancer. I am particularly interested in investigating how the immune system can be harnessed to target and eliminate cancer cells, and how neuroinflammation may contribute to the development of cancer. I did my thesis project on Alzheimer's Disease, which has allowed me to approach this topic from a multidisciplinary perspective. Overall, I am excited to continue exploring the fascinating and complex relationship between these three fields of study.

As a Research Assistant at our lab, led by Dr. Gilbertson, we investigate the fascinating world of taste perception at the cellular level. In this new study, I will explore how mice detect MCFAs, a specific type of fat. Through clever experiments using specialized drugs, we've identified a key signaling pathway in taste cells triggered by MCFAs. This research sheds light on the complex mechanisms of taste and paves the way for further discoveries in gustatory (taste) neuroscience.

As a member secretary of an institutional ethics committee, I played a crucial role in ensuring that research studies involving human participants adhered to the highest ethical standards. In this position, I was responsible for overseeing the review process for new research protocols, coordinating committee meetings, and maintaining accurate records of all committee activities. One of my key responsibilities was to ensure that all research studies received a thorough and timely review to ensure that they met ethical guidelines and protected the rights and welfare of participants. This involved working closely with researchers to clarify any ethical issues that arose and suggesting ways to modify study designs or procedures to address these concerns. I also collaborated with other members of the ethics committee to develop policies and procedures for the review and oversight of research studies, and to ensure that these policies were consistently applied across all research projects.
