According to the United Nations Sustainability Goal #11, half of all the people in the world live in cities. One of the targets for goal #11 is “safe and affordable housing.” To me, safety does not just mean how it impacts occupants; it also means how it impacts the people who build it and the environment around it. As the daughter of a construction worker, I have seen how these types of jobs degrade the environment around them and degrade the bodies of those who build them. Economic growth should not come at the cost of the well-being of people who work “blue-collar” jobs.Though there are laws against housing discrimination, according to the 2018 National Fair Housing Report, 19% of complaints reported were for discrimination based on race. The United States has consistently had a troubling history with race. Within my work, I want to address not only sustainability regarding the environment, but in terms of people as well. To me it is vital to combine this aspect because in most cases regarding housing, communities typically are gentrified when the housing is improved. The ties of finance and race are so apparent, but often not fully considered. Opportunities to get a better paying job to move to a better home are harder to get without a college degree, which most students who do not come from stable housing or experience homelessness may not get the opportunity. Of those homeless, 40% are African American according to the 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment.
