  • Reach Out
    Executive Director
Reach Out Jun 2005 - Present
    Inland Empire, Ca
As Executive Director at Reach Out, I strive to drive change through policy and by directing funding and programs that impact over two million residents annually in the Inland Empire.During the nearly two decades that I’ve overseen Reach Out’s work, our operating budget has increased by 40x, and our staff to over 95 employees. What began as a small substance use program has expanded into a platform of advocate coalitions, community collaboratives, a brick-and-mortar Resource Center, and 30+ programs aimed at building a safer, healthier, economically vibrant Inland Empire region. Our organization leads the charge in deep root cause work that encompasses five key areas of focus that we believe have the highest influence on our region’s health and wellbeing: 1. Health Workforce Development 2. Community Health & Wellness 3. Community Mobilization & Policy 4. Youth Access & Advancement 5. Social Equity & Advocacy In addition to our coalitions and programs, we provide managed services to schools, healthcare systems, and government agencies in order to help them: • Build the health workforce pipeline through Work-Based Learning programs • Improve health outcomes by training and staffing Community Health Workers • Reduce healthcare costs through large scale, transformative Healthy Cities initiatives • Improve care capacity through training in LGBTQ competency, substance use, & more • Advocate for students by training and staffing Intervention Specialists in schools • Provide case management and resources to justice-involved youth, via Youth CourtDuring my tenure, Reach Out has become a foundational non-profit in the Inland Empire, frequently serving as a backbone organization for other regional nonprofits. With deep roots in civic initiatives and regional health equity efforts, Reach Out has become known by policymakers and funders as a powerful and trustworthy representative of the people of the Inland Empire.

  • San Bernardino County Department Of Public Health
Co-Chair – Community Vital Signs Initiative

  • Center For Community Action & Environmental Justice
    Development Director
Center For Community Action & Environmental Justice Oct 2003 - May 2005
    Jurupa Valley, California
In my prior role at JUSD, I happened to meet the leader of the Center for Community Action & Environmental Justice while working in the community garden one afternoon. That interaction led to a new opportunity which would also plant a seed for my to-be passion for environmental justice work, a perspective I bring to all of my board work and our initiatives at Reach Out.At the CCAEJ, I was responsible for:• Growing CCAEJ’s operating budget by 6x during my year and a half tenure• Working with foundations and the State of California to secure funds to advance our work• Securing a $2.1 million grant for the development of a public park• Advancing the organization's capacity with the help of community partners
  • Jurupa Unified School District
Educational Consultant/Ascent Program Designer & Director
Jurupa Unified School District Oct 1998 - Jun 2003
    Jurupa Valley, California
In retrospect, my work with Jurupa Unified gave birth to my career iThe AsCent Programn nonprofit community work. It was at JUSD that I cut my teeth in grant writing, gained direct experience in program management, learned how to navigate the pros and cons of bureaucracy, and most importantly, discovered my passion for supporting youth and those that empower them. When I joined JUSD, they had never had an afterschool program before, so I was hired to develop the first comprehensive after school program for all three of its middle schools. The mission of the AsCent program is to create new possibilities for all JUSD Middle School students. Through involvement in the community, student participation in their own education, and acceptance of responsibility, AsCent challenges students to develop into good citizens. In this role, I was responsible for:• Designing and implementing the District’s first-ever after school program • Creating unique after school experiences ranging from sports to museum visits• Working cross-functionally with teachers, staff, and administrators for program buy-in• Vetting, hiring, and managing staff who were supportive, kid-friendly, and passionate• Authoring grants to secure the funding necessary to sustain the district-wide program• Managing grants post-award to ensure proper budgeting, reporting, and complianceWhile afterschool programs can be mundane, I like to think we made a substantial impact on the young people that were involved. Rather than just doing homework, we implemented a 3-sport athletic program which gave over 350 young people the chance to be on a team for the first time. We made sure that kids who rarely get to leave their neighborhoods went to places like The Getty, the beach, water parks, and downtown walking tours. I can’t tell you how many kids had never seen the Pacific Ocean, despite living only an hour away.Having played a role in the founding is one of my proudest professional accomplishments.
