  • Dianna Laferry Art + Stitchery
Layout Art & Design, Project Management And Consulting, Surface Design
Dianna Laferry Art + Stitchery Oct 2010 - Jul 2022
    Martinez And Oakland, Ca
Highly experienced consultant to the home sewing industry. My longest-running client, Decades of Style Pattern Company, continues to utilize my strategies, consultations, fashion illustrations, PDF products, and technical document layout as integral components of their business.I formally became a regular freelance designer in October of 2010, although I have occasionally accepted freelance design work since 1993. My digital work is primarily produced using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. My analog work spans traditional media such as pencil, colored pencil, pen and ink, gouache, and watercolor. Beginning in 2010, I designed and produced a line of sewing patterns, and I licensed surface designs to the commercial quilting cotton industry. I produced designs for P&B Textiles and Benartex, Inc. This period of freelance work and fabric design coincided with being an at-home parent to my very young child. Unfortunately, my momentum with designing fabrics was interrupted by Hurricane Sandy, as the NYC-based manufacturer of my fabrics was severely impacted by damage from the storm. From that loss, I launched into freelance couture embroidery services, iron-on embroidery patterns, illustration, and document layout as my child entered preschool. I continue to design fabrics for digital print on the Spoonflower platform, and I maintain a small roster of ongoing design clients.

  • Roughing It Day Camp
    Communications Coordinator, Client Relationship Liaison
Roughing It Day Camp Apr 2017 - Aug 2020
    Lafayette, Ca
I was accountable for developing and executing communications strategies for this long-running all-outdoor summer day camp. My responsibilities during summer were very different from the rest of the year. In the 9 months of off-season, I was focused on maintaining, building, and strengthening customer relationships with the goals of camper retention, re-enrollment, and referrals. During camp, I handled communications between parents, camp counselors, and camp leadership in a fast-paced environment. This required friendliness, patience, a sense of detail, and multi-faceted problem-solving. As a tech-free camp, I also managed and directed the Summer Media Assistant, who was the camp photographer/videographer. Together, we posted the best photos from each day on Roughing It’s proprietary camper website. These posts detailed campers’ achievements each week. I also sent e-news to the families of over 20 different camper groups each week. In all aspects, I worked closely with camp ownership to ensure that our copy and images maintained an arc consistent with the quality and history of the organization.During my time at Roughing It, we explored and implemented various strategies and projects to help reach those goals. Successes included: increasing newsletter open rates, prioritizing more frequent posting of photos during camp, standardizing the camp’s brand graphics, streamlining the production of our newsletters, increasing video marketing innovation, increased understanding of social media, and targeted market research. When the COVID crisis emerged in March 2020, I worked remotely to help edit crucial messaging, assisted with communications about Camp Season 2020 delays (and ultimately the Season's cancellation), and provided input for new, COVID-relevant Roughing It products. I resigned in August of 2020 to assist with my child's return to grade school in a remote environment.

I joined the staff of this once-weekly toddler/Pre-K playgroup as a hostess and facilitator after my very positive experience as an attendee with my toddler-aged child. Each week, I greeted families and facilitated play among the youngsters, mingled with their parents. I also led the children and their parents in singing songs, engaged the children with dramatic storytime readings, provided bubbles, set up for craft activities, etc.My duties also included opening and closing the facility, coordinating email announcements and snack volunteers, receiving enrollments and payments, basic food and beverage service, and light janitorial tasks.
  • Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics
Associate Buyer, Department Manager, Web Master & Brand Coordinator, Client Relationship Specialist
    Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics Aug 2004 - Oct 2010
    Berkeley, California
I wore many hats during my six years at Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics. I began as a customer service associate, cutting fabrics for and giving advice to customers and re-shelving cut fabrics. I was quickly promoted to a key-holder who was responsible for both opening and closing the store. An avid knitter and crocheter, I was made the manager of the yarn department. Not long after, I became an assistant fabric buyer, and lead the store’s multigenerational family ownership through several phases of strategic growth, including re-branding campaigns and website updates. As the manager of the yarn department, I met with regional sales reps, made wholesale orders, managed stock, and ran sales as needed. As an assistant fabric buyer, I met with regional sales reps alongside owner and manager Suzan Steinberg and made suggestions based on sales, customer demands, and upcoming trends in quilting and apparel crafting. The rebranding included the evolution of 2-3 logo suites over 5 years, bringing a more contemporary look to the store’s visual presence in order to reach a younger and wider customer base. My efforts included producing not only logos, but printed collateral for the store, including sale and event postcards, commemorative posters, business cards, signage, banners, CAD-cut window vinyl, and more. I was also called upon to completely re-create the store’s website, which we did twice as our online needs grew and changed. My behind-the-scenes work on these versions of their website greatly influenced the store’s ownership and set the stage for their current success as an online retailer, something we had not yet realized when I left the store. My successes included modernizing the store’s offerings to become more trend-aware, updating branding to reach a younger customer base, growing sales through suggested improvements to both the inventory and the store’s overall look and feel, and innovations that ultimately furthered the store’s continuing growth.
  • Massive Graphics
Assistant Art Director, Designer, Production Artist
    Massive Graphics Aug 1999 - Aug 2003
    Norman, Oklahoma
I was responsible for producing art concepts and camera-ready artwork primarily for print onto promotional tee shirts. I also produced embroidery designs for ball caps and polo shirts, and with the larger design team, I designed and produced logos and branding for professional sports teams, businesses, collegiate entities, and local organizations. All artwork was produced using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, with source material often being hand-drawn in a variety of media. I also assisted with covers and layout of Disc Golf World News magazine, a trade publication produced using Quark Express. My duties included meeting with clients in person and over the phone, assessing their design needs and budget, giving price quotations for both design and production of printed apparel, and following up with high-volume clients. I met with and designed for hundreds of clients each year.As Assistant Art Director, I directly assisted the owner and principal designer, Kent Johnson, with producing artwork for larger clients. This meant versioning, making edits, and in some cases ghost-producing work for him as needed. I also helped to oversee and direct less experienced designers. We primarily produced designs for tee shirts, but we also did branding and developed logo suites and color design for professional and regional sports teams, collegiate fan-wear, and local restaurants. Restaurant work included menu design, signage design, menu board production, and interior color schemes and custom murals. Major clients included the Arena Football Leauge (AFL) and AFL2, the Central Hockey League, and Collegiate Licensing for The University of Oklahoma. We also produced shirts for the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team, the X-Games, many more. My time at Massive Graphics was all about client relationships and great designs produced on time, on spec, and under budget. Many of my efforts greatly supported Massive Graphics during a time of accelerated growth.
  • The Shirt Shop
    Art Director, Primary Production Artist
The Shirt Shop Dec 1993 - May 1999
    Bartlesville, Oklahoma
I began my graphic design career at The Shirt Shop, where I designed hundreds of custom tee shirt designs for local clients each year. I met with clients, assessed the needs of their order, calculated and submitted price quotations, and designed press-ready art for their orders. As I was almost always the only designer on staff, I was required to work in a wide variety of different styles under very tight deadlines. I produced press-ready artwork using hand-cut Rubylith film, paste-up, hand-drawn art scanned and printed onto clear acetate, and finally digital art using very early versions of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.I also oversaw the print production process, working closely with those in the press room who were imprinting the actual tee shirts. I also ran the high-heat press, and manned the mobile tee shirt transfer booth. I often answered the phones, accepted deliveries, took payment for finished orders, purchased orders of wholesale printable apparel and printing supplies, calculated payroll, and arranged displays in the front of the store. I also managed all aspects of the store during times the owners were away. My ability to work comfortably with a wide variety of clients and produce attractive, accurate, on-time artwork quickly helped The Shirt Shop grow. Word of mouth in our small town brought lots of referrals, and as a result I often worked incredibly long hours just to meet deadline. Successes included modernizing the art production processes from manual, hand-drawn paste-up and Rubylith to re-printable digital artwork. My self-learning of both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on-the-job and on-the-fly facilitated increased production speed. I also modernized the store’s paper forms, including the client intake and quotation sheets, to keep the client experience consistent and reduce errors. When I left the Shirt Shop, it had morphed from a solid little mom-and-pop operation into a respected local provider of quality custom apparel.
  • Freelance Dressmaking
    Seamstress, Alterationist, Custom Clothier
    Freelance Dressmaking Dec 1993 - Aug 1998
    Bartlesville, Oklahoma
I performed a variety of sewing services, alterations, and repairs for bridal and hard-to-fit clients. Together, my mother and I worked on many wedding jobs, providing a wide range of services such as beading and lace repair, altering clothing up or down in size, hemming of formalwear and adjustment of bridal trains. Our services quickly grew to include original design and construction of custom wedding party gowns, often making duplicates of the same design for 8 attendants or more. We were especially known for inclusive designing and fitting, making formal attendants’ gowns to fit maternity, elderly/special needs clients, and expanded size needs. Successes included re-making and repairing an entire wedding party’s worth of gowns in less than a week, size and body type inclusivity, and couture-quality custom gowns in silk with beads.
