About Dick Stolley

Dick Stolley is a Senior Editorial Adviser at Time Inc. contract. He possess expertise in editorial, magazines, journalism, editing, publishing and 18 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "Dick is the perfect editor. If I write more, I'll put him in the uncomfortable position of having to edit his own recommendation, but I'll hazard it. I worked for Dick as a writer of LIFE: World War 2 in 2001, and it remains one of the great experiences of my career. He marshaled that 352-page picture history in six months flat. His command of every aspect of it was masterful; the evidence resides on every page. The compelling selection of images and the graceful concision of fact, informed perspective, and drama explain why the book made the New York Times bestsellers list. But this is what's invisible: no matter the hour of night copy arrived or the pressure to turn it around, Dick effortlessly transformed it with exquisite edits -- even the last of them, from aboard the QE2. His elegant ways were unfailingly supportive and inspiring, and left me ever-grateful for the experience. One would be a fool not to hire or work for Dick, if given the chance." and "Dick Stolley, the founding editor of PEOPLE, was inducted a few ago into the Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame (hope I have the title right; Dick is a stickler for fact-checking.) Dick hired me as a writer at People in 1979, and I will always be grateful for that. He soon moved on to edit LIFE and ascend to even higher echelons of Time Inc.. But in the short time I worked for him, I learned much more from him than I can easily summarize here. Much of my professionalism was forged in the crucible of Dick Stolley's (and Dick Burgheim's) original PEOPLE. Lessons about reporting and writing, to be sure, but also about the standards to be applied to every word and image on every page of every issue of any self-respecting, useful, entertaining and successful magazine. By the way, though Dick is usually thought of as a brilliant field general and a consummate wordsmith (both of which he is), he is also one of the great picture editors I have ever seen. I have always been visually inclined, but I cannot praise highly enough the lessons about pictures I learned just from standing near Stolley at layout sessions. His ability to quickly scan a contact sheet with a loupe (those artifacts of the film era), swiftly circle with a grease pencil (another artifact) the one perfect lead picture that everyone else had missed, and vanish into his office, leaving the rest of us to marvel as we took turns with the loupe, well, you had to be there. And thanks to Dick, I was."

Listed skills include Editorial, Magazines, Journalism, Editing, and 19 others.
