I have always been visually inclined, but I cannot praise highly enough the lessons about pictures I learned just from standing near Stolley at layout sessions. His ability to quickly scan a contact sheet with a loupe (those artifacts of the film era), swiftly circle with a grease pencil (another artifact) the one perfect lead picture that everyone else had missed, and vanish into his office, leaving the rest of us to marvel as we took turns with the loupe, well, you had to be there.
