About Jon Nelson
Throughout the duration of my doctoral studies my investigations have focused on the neuromodulation of sensory input via neuropeptides and the factors that influence the release of the peptide hormone, AKH. I am also a passionate and avid supporter of the implementation of neurotechnology as a medical therapy and enhancement.

Wake Forest University provides an excellent environment for the students where labs do not simply repeat the information that is taught in lecture, but rather, employs that new knowledge and applies it to realistic research questions in the lab. As the Teaching Assistant, I am able to help direct the students down the right avenues, reinforce and remind them of the information that they need in order to solve the problems that they face, and foster an appreciation for science. At the same time, I am also on the lookout for bright and inquisitive minds to attempt to recruit to the Johnson Lab to carry out undergraduate research.
Phd Candidate
The primary focus of my research is to better understand how physiological states can feed back on sensory neurons to alter their perception of the environment and thereby affect the behavioral output of an organism. I do this using Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly, as a model due to the powerful genetic tools that I am able to employ in my studies with it. Further understanding this neuronal feedback mechanism, known as neuromodulation will aid us as we consider why organisms respond the way that they do to stimuli, better understand off target effects of drugs, and potential reveal insights into an essential process that occurs throughout the brain including memory formation.Meanwhile, I also help in ongoing research within the lab of Dr. Erik Johnson where we focus on neuropeptides. Recently, the lab has focused on AKH - a hormone involved in metabolism.
Lab Technician Iii
While at WFBH I was fortunate enough to assist two principal investigators. While working with Dr. Xuewei Zhu, my efforts focused on maintaining the mouse colony and bench work primarily revolving around qRT-PCR, ELISAs, and cell culture of bone marrow derived macrophage. The data that we collected implicates autophagy in poly-unsaturated fatty acid-mediated inflammasome activation and that this in turn reduces the occurrence of atherosclerosis. Additionally, I spent some time in the lab of Dr. Kylie Kavanagh aiding with ELISAs and the trouble shooting of a series of western blots.(more papers to be added as published)
Biology Masters Student
While at UNCG, my research focused on identifying genomic regions that were indicative of epigenetic drug efficacy. Currently, epigenetic drugs are most commonly used in the treatment of various forms of cancer and are being considered for use in a number of other diseases. My research illustrated that a bioinformatics approach to determining these sites is possible and identified suspect regions and profiles within two different cancer cell lines.
