I worked on the Plateau Project ran by Newmont Mining Corporation as an Exploration Geologist. My primary role was logging diamond drill core. Tasks included describing lithologies, taking structural measurements, sample selection, and QAQC insertion. Other duties included teching core, and preparing cut samples for shipment. When required I also participated in smaller mapping/prospecting and soil sampling campaigns. ,

I was tasked with researching two areas of interest. (1) looking at multiple thin sections and identifying different mineral alteration styles. The alteration styles were photographed using optical microscopy. To gain further information on the alteration, I also used a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and an electron microprobe. (2) Researching the relationship between overpressure and hydrocarbons. The first step was to conduct a scholarly review of the subject. I was interested in seeing,- Were the methods used to identify overpressure in the Malay Basin in Indonesia applicable to the Scotian Basin?- What was the primary cause of overpressure in the Scotian Basin? -Was diagenesis playing a part in overpressure generation in the Scotian Basin? I enhanced my technology skills via Microsoft, CorelDraw, and Grapher by turning large data sets into graphs and tables. I familiarized my self with well logs and identifying shale intervals based on specific criteria. In order to test diagenesis, I created <2 micron slides in a lab at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. This required a high attention to detail and precision. All of this hard work came together in the form of an honours thesis.
