About John Turner
What is the purpose of High School Education? Is it just preparation for a future life to come, or can the teenage years be a productive and enjoyable time in their own right? What knowledge and ideas should we require students to engage with? How much freedom should we give students to explore on their own? How can we best support those explorations? Are our assessments of student performance valid? Too often, we avoid questions like these because they are tough and challenging, casting doubt over our current structures and pedagogy, and because we lack the confidence to make radical improvements to our profession. I am determined to play a part in the vital re-imagining of education. My vision is that the student experience should spread across three domains of learning: DISCOVER > DREAM > DODISCOVER > what isOur students find themselves alive, on a rock, hurtling through space, nearby a giant ‘fire’ in the sky, with nobody at the helm. They urgently need to Discover: who and what they are; what is this rock they’re living on, and how does it sustain life; what other creatures share the rock; what opportunities and dangers surround them; how have humans organised ourselves into societies, and how have those communities evolved; how do we know what we know; what is yet to be discovered; what else is out there? Traditional school subjects do cover many of these topics - but what is often missing is a 'big-picture' narrative and understanding of why this knowledge is vital. DREAM > what could beYoung people are not easily satisfied by their Discoveries of What Is. They imagine different worlds, better ideas, an vast ocean of possibilities. Time should be built into the curriculum for students to explore their own ideas, hopes and fears - in a safe, structured and appropriately-scaffolded environment.DO > make change happenSchools should help students to realize that they have agency – the ability to Make Change Happen. We must help students to turn their dreams into reality – today; to start making their mark on the world – now; and to continue leading innovation for the rest of their lives.I have taught at some of the highest performing schools in the UK, Switzerland, and Hong Kong, with 20+ years teaching experience (10+ years as an educational leader). I am also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) with 3 years experience as an external auditor. Currently I work at ESF Centre, advising and supporting all ESF secondary schools in their mission to enable every student to be the best they can be.
Listed skills include Secondary Education, Physics, Curriculum Development, Teaching, and 8 others.
