About Dixie Weber
As a teacher for 20 years, I loved helping students learn and grow in knowledge, but felt I needed to "teach" in a more personal way, providing emotional support to others, so they could achieve life-long personal growth and well-being. I continued my own journey of personal growth, working on an Ed.S. (Education Specialist) degree in Guidance & Counseling. I completed over half of the academic coursework, along with more than 4,000 hours of "supervised clinical counseling experience". What does that really mean? I worked to mend relationships, preserve families, and heal emotional wounds of many: overwhelmed parents; children who had been physically, emotionally, sexually abused; adjudicated teens, female adolescent sex offenders, and those struggling with addictions. I had found my calling! But life is what happens when you're on your way in one direction, yet feel compelled to move in another, (even if it was supposed to be temporary.) In Fall of 2005, my son offered me an opportunity to do Sales & Mktg for his fledgling company, Country Wireless. (I later realized I had signed on as Office Manager, Public Relations Ambassador, and Director of Customer Service.) From 75 customers to thousands, it has been very rewarding to grow a strong, successful company with him. Few people get that chance; I am so glad I took it!Through Innovative Services, I became a Job Coach. But I couldn't deny my passion to support and serve those living with the challenges of mental illness, brain disorders, and substance use/addiction. I contacted my local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Ilness) affiliate, Portage-Wood Co. and reached their President. I told her my story. She said, "Why don't you become a Peer Specialist?" So I did! Several years later, after intensive training, and passing the State Certification Exam, I worked as a Certified Peer Specialist, at A Better Way Clubhouse, in Marshfield, WI, (4 yrs). I am also a Certified Parent Peer Specialist. I worked as a Wood Co. Crisis Interventionist/Mobile Crisis worker, (almost 4 yrs), but resigned in December, 2023. I continue my active involvement in the mental health field, currently as a volunteer, through NAMI, (Peer Support Group Facilitator, and Educator.) I plan and participate in community events to raise awareness about mental health issues! I hope to change how we treat people with mental illnesses, (medically & ethically).I can't be quiet! I have to advocate for others & help erase the stigma! I speak to businesses/organizations/other groups, and write. (avoicecarries.com)
