From my first psychology classes in my junior year of high school I knew that a career in the field was what I wanted for my future. I discovered a passion for understanding human behavior and how it impacts our well-being. To me, psychology is a window into the lives and perspectives of others, and most importantly, an insight into how people can be helped beyond their limitations.This semester I've branched out into working hand-in-hand with fellow undergraduates and managers at the University Center to provide for students and faculty through a variety of trained positions. At the University Center I've built bonds with my peers and supervisors, while developing skills in customer service, collaboration, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment, all while maintaining a balance with my academic responsibilities and personal relationships.As part of the University's Sociology of Social Problems class in my first semester, I had the valuable opportunity to apply learned sociological and psychological concepts in the real world through volunteering at a Salvation Army site in the city. I was able to work with young, at-risk individuals in our community and saw firsthand how poverty, homelessness, and mental health crises negatively affected their lives and futures. This experience reinforced my desire to help other young people however I could, both inside and outside of schools.Although I haven't had much professional experience within the field of psychology as of yet, I'm excited to gain insight into this area and develop myself through hands-on experience and the guidance of others. I'm most eager to build my own network and work towards establishing better mental health provisons in schools to provide for students' future growth and well-being.
