About Karl Ward

After many years of sales & management in the technology sector, I was asked to help coach tennis at the Salt Lake Tennis Club on a part-time basis. It was a dream come true. I am now the Director of Tennis and have had tremendous success in growing the tennis portion of the club by 112% from 2019 to 2021 and turning the club from annual losses to seven figure annual profits in the tennis department. Towards the end of 2019 I was given the chance to run the beginning high school program. This went from less than a dozen students to over 130 students in our February 2022 session and continues to grow in 2023 and 2024. In 2020, the Director of Tennis recognized my business acumen and I began to help with reports, spreadsheets, and court allocation based on profit/court/hour. In April of 2021 I became the Director of Tennis. With a staff of 30+ tennis professionals and the help of a forward-thinking owner, we have become the top tennis club in Utah and won awards from the Utah Tennis Association, the USTA Private Club of the Year, and our players continue to earn college scholarships and a couple have joined the pro tour.My leadership style is collaborative as I seek agreement from my staff members on effective ways to structure their classes to maximize the customer experience, profits for the club, and enhance their personal well-being. I am constantly looking for additional opportunities to expand programs. This includes programs outside the club (For example, staffing an after school program in local elementary school gyms using red ball nets and red or orange balls. This has become a great source of additional revenue as well as planting seeds for young players to join our programs at younger ages). My background is in sales and marketing. I was the top salesperson in Warren Buffett's RC Willey chain of stores from 1993 to 1995 (out of 1000 salespeople). I also won top awards for my work in the technology sector for 10 years. When potential tennis players call into our club and speak with me about our programs, the closing ratio for membership is 4 out of 5 (about 80%. The national average for sales professionals is close to 40%). Other bonuses... I speak fluent Spanish. I worked in the tech sector for two decades so I'm comfortable working with and learning new systems and applications and understand how to read data and convert that data into analytics which promote profitability, accountability, and efficiency. I LOVE TENNIS!!! I currently work 50 to 60 hours a week and when I'm not working, I'm often thinking about what more can be done
