Despite a broad and successful work history in various industries – as well as the experience of owning and running three small businesses – Don remained unhappy and unfulfilled by his work. In 1994, he paid for outplacement services in order to help figure out why.The outplacement firm ended up hiring Don. Within a year, however, it was clear from talking to his clients, and also from his own experience, that outplacement services had brought them no closer to identifying and actively pursuing their personal success than they had been before.Ever since, Don has been on a mission to fundamentally change the way people find and select their jobs. By talking with over 15,000 job seekers and business owners over the past 20 years, he has come to understand the process that leads people – whether they’re a plumber or a Fortune 500 CEO – to identify the jobs they actually want to do, rather than simply the jobs they can do. His company, Resume Not Required, educates jobs seekers – as well as companies – about the perils of traditional job searches and empowers them with a process that allows them to select the job that is best suited for them. Although unconventional, it is a remarkably logical, pragmatic and, most importantly, proactive – rather than reactive – strategy that can be employed in all industries and at every career level. Not to overstate the importance of his mission, but as long as we continue to accept the status-quo when it comes to finding and hiring for jobs, over half the work force will remain unhappy and unengaged with their work, leading us as a nation further down the road to political, educational and economic mediocrity.
