Being a part of the small team at Sunshine Solar allowed for quick career development due to the higher responsibility and exposure that wouldn’t be seen in a typical graduate role. During this time, I worked on a large variety of projects including a feasibility study for a grid-scale solar farm, to be installed in the Christchurch Red-Zone. This work included collaboration with electrical engineering field leaders from the University of Canterbury to ensure our work puts cutting edge research to practice. Within this project I managed the electrical design, system modelling, procurement (components and sub-contractors), and client relations which includes meeting with key stakeholders such as the Christchurch City Council and Orion to ensure the project’s success. Other projects included numerous commercial, industrial, and residential designs (PV and solar hot water) at various scales. This involved meeting with and engaging in the sales process with decision makers and project leads.

I had two key roles at Stanbury Electrical. Firstly, I was hired to work directly with technical director to optimise some of the manufacturing processes within their factory. By optimising these processes, I made the assembly both easier and faster. My second role was to collaborate with another engineer to prototype a new power-electronic unit that functioned as a battery charger.

I worked at Sunshine Solar as an electrical engineering intern. My time was predominantly spent doing system level design for solar systems for both residential and commercial systems. This included electrical system design, working with customers and performing economic analysis on the systems.

At Bluelab I worked in the production department assembling, soldering, and programming products that would then be sold to consumers. I worked as part of a team that rotated through different roles each day and learnt a vast number of practical manufacturing skills, from electroplating carbons, to epoxying plastic parts together. Through this I gained experience in manufacturing electronics that has proved immensely useful over my career and time at university.
