Working on Setting up a Regional Area in Oregon and California for Purcell Painting and Coatings. This is going to be fun!

Consultant – lending my leadership experience and out of the box thinking to owners, engineers, project managers and others; helping them to navigate tough project situations, to advance in poorly represented markets, to streamline operations, to process through pivotal organizational changes, and other logistical and technical planning.

Initially, I was brought on to standardize and develop the estimation procedures for Scott Coatings through the use of Hard Dollar software and Bluebeam software. I acted as the “chief estimator” for a while establishing these protocols and procedures. I was successful in marrying Bluebeam and Hard Dollar allowing the takeoff in Bluebeam to populate the estimate in Hard Dollar with a click of a button. To my knowledge, Scott Coatings is the only company with this capability. Additionally, I was able to establish all the estimation modules for the estimation department, improving the estimate quality and speed. Currently, I am now functioning as a senior project manager responsible for 10 million in painting projects while training the project management team in the art of estimating. I am also currently working on the seamless communication procedures for the Field Crews and the Project Management team through a digital platform.

Responsible for developing the coatings department within a large dry wall company. I was able to build the coatings department from 2.9 million per year to 15 million per year by strategic business planning, establishing solid protocols, finding the right employees, mentoring foreman, general foreman, estimators and project managers in both commercial and industrial projects. I was responsible for establishing two new coatings departments in two regions (Reno and Seattle) and bolstered the existing two regions (Eugene and Portland). Additionally, I was able to lead the coatings department team in the development and implementation of a completely digital “foreman’s job book” that allowed free flow of information between all the foremen, project managers, and department managers. This digital system and set of protocols utilizes the flexibility of the iOS iPad platform for the field and the heavy power of Microsoft OS for the office. Together with customized software and applications foreman, estimators and project managers could edit or view all the paperwork necessary on one source in real time.

My responsibilities included reviewing all the work procedures, safety procedures, and protocols of the Coatings Department for the sole purpose of taking over for the current retiring Superintendent. While I was there I oversaw the SWCAA reporting, prepared the DOE Hazardous Waste Reduction Report, updated and revised OIW’s respirator protection program, improved the safety training log and set up assigned facilitator, revitalized the safety tool program, implemented a hazardous waste recycling program, handled all estimating for the paint department, created a perpetual three week look ahead schedule for all the departments benefit, and I introduces several new technologies to OIW.

Project Manager – My responsibilities included pioneering new markets which included technical proposals, bid proposals, budgets estimates, and negotiated contracts for the emerging air barrier industry, below grade waterproofing, pipelines, bridges, storage tanks, dam equipment including spillway gates, scroll cases, penstocks, etc. I was responsible for annually producing 4-8 million in sales. I specialized in large logistical projects where I lead the company as a general contractor managing not only our work but multiple subcontractors, requiring well-prepared and facilitated operational procedure. These included site specific environmental plans, safety plans, and work plans. I Designed and implemented estimating software that eliminated redundant bidding tasks while increasing the effectiveness and quality of all the estimators using the software. I also trained all the estimators in this software and in good bidding practices.

Estimator – My primary responsibility was estimating, preparing proposals, and budget estimates for large architectural painting projects. The secondary responsibility was to initiate, and train all the estimators and project managers at Long Painting Company in the use of Hard Dollar estimating software. This included customization and standardization of the electronic estimating procedures at Long Painting Company.

Owner – As an owner I was responsible for all aspects of business from marketing through project completion. Applied Solutions specialized in highly logistical short duration projects, most of which were in Alaska. These projects included: Technical seamless floor applications, industrial steel coatings systems, and concrete restoration coatings systems.

Project Manager – As a PM I was responsible for development of technical proposals, bid proposals, budgets estimates, and negotiated contracts for pipelines, bridges, pulp and paper mills, storage tanks, dam equipment including spillway gates, scroll cases, penstocks, etc. Annually responsible for 2-3 million in sales and was required to profitably manage the same. I specialized in large logistical projects.

Consulted for PCL Civil Constructors - I designed and engineered a method of abrasive blasting and coating of a 21-foot diameter, 8500-foot long siphon with grades nearly 50%. This entailed the design and implementation of automated equipment to mechanically abrasive blast and paint. My responsibilities also required design and implementation of the written SOP (standard operating procedure) that would keep the employees safe in a potentially volatile environment. This SOP was also designed to establish our procedures for handling all potential environmental hazards.

Foreman and Central Division Manager – Started as a foreman and moved on to Manage the central California Division. Estimated and prepared blasting and coating bids for pipelines, oil refineries, tanks, co-generation plants, food facilities, etc. Additionally my responsibilities included directing more than 20 men in their various projects including shutdowns.

Estimator, Foreman – I was responsible for estimating abrasive blasting and coating for pipelines and tanks. Designed and implemented a computer estimating and analysis systems for the Coatings Division.

Operations Manager—I started as a pot tender and acquired experience as a blaster, painter and then foreman. Promoted to operations manager, responsible for all areas of blasting and coating (industrial, heavy industrial, commercial & architectural). I Supervised blasting and coating of pipelines, tanks and structural steel utilizing various abrasive media types & coatings.
