Teacher Of English, History, And Esl
Current
English, History, Esl, And Learning Skills Teacher
CurrentDuring my time at the Solebury School, I have had the opportunity to teach an interesting range of courses. This year I am teaching AP U.S. History, three social justice electives, and three sections of World History 9. In the past seven years I've also taught courses in the English department, ESL department, and in the Learning Skills program. Beyond the classroom, I am an adviser, coach, and started and advise the Model UN activity at the school. I’ve run a Cultural Competency Professional Development Group, served as a member of the Judicial Committee and the Academic Committee. I also continue mentored teachers both onsite and off.
Day Camp Director
As the day camp director, I oversaw a staff of 30, specialists, leads, and junior counselors, and anywhere from 70 to 115 campers, pre-K through 8th grade, per week. I worked closely with the Director of Camps at Summerside to develop curriculum and activities for campers, provide and maintain a safe environment for campers and staff, and create a welcoming and fun environment. Some of my responsibilities included supervision of staff, filling in for specialists, orchestrating the final Friday events, and maintaining a safe and efficient car line.
Teacher
During my time at the Abington Friends School, I taught Upper School English, specifically English 9, English 9--Honors, English 11, English 11--Honors/AP Literature, Senior Writing, and senior electives. I also taught History 9, The Ancient and Medieval World, for four years, and created and taught a library skills course. Along with teaching, I was an adviser to 10-12 students a year, a coach in the Middle and Upper Schools, and also a mentor to new teachers. I worked with the Development Office as both a faculty liaison and also on the Leadership Committee for Giving and served as a clerk for two committees for AFS's own Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS) and also as an evaluator on the PAIS review of the Haverford School.
Assistant Director
While working at AFSEP, I served as the Assistant Director of the camp of 300 campers, ages 4-14, supervising counselors and evaluating and generating programming. I directed soccer camps, “Goin’ Fishin’” camps, and some years “The AFS Summer Writing Workshop.” I also developed and led two 2-week, outdoor adventure programs (“Whale of a Tale,” Summer, 2011 and “Great Outdoor Adventure,” Summer, 2012) for the Summer Humanities Series which took students off campus for two weeks stretches and exposed them to fabulous outdoor experiences, such as sailing a tall ship out of New London, Connecticut and white water rafting and camping on the New River in West Virginia.
