I challenge and influence the organizations who engage me.Psychosocial risk management is an integrated component of the critical risk management programs that I’ve been facilitating for clients since 2016. Recently highlighted by legislative changes and increased public awareness of how workplaces can cause psychological and emotional harm, organisations are increasingly focussed on identifying and mitigating psychosocial risk factors in their workplace.Typically, this work begins with analysis of client data (incident reports, investigation transcripts and recommendations from both HR & safety departments). A desktop review of written procedures pertaining to managing operational risk may occur at this point to ascertain a client’s level of awareness of their obligations to manage their operational risk and the controls they deem appropriate to do so. Even though controls have been identified by the client, they are often incomplete, not universally or consistently applied or otherwise ineffective in the workplace.In a best- case scenario, where sufficient data exists, I build a risk profile and register for clients based on where critical risks exposures have historically occurred.From this point, I verify my understanding using interviews, focus groups and face to face meetings. When I run workshop sessions for leaders on how to verify critical controls to mitigate operational (OHS) risks, I emphasise that these controls (best practise leadership behaviour- visible, present, caring, consultative, collaborative, providing recognition & feedback) that mitigate physical risk also mitigates psychosocial risk.
