A new customer asked me how I learned how to do this. I told them I learned it all on the job. The next question naturally was, how long have you been doing this? After I exhausted all my fingers and toes, I told them that I started in 1992 as a Mac operator. My primary function as the third member of the “system department” was plotting type from a Mac II out of Quark Express. My how things have changed. That temp job turned out to be my career. Fast forward 25 years or so and now the Mac computer can keep 6 offset and 5 digital presses running all day long. The more things change, the more they stay the same.I remain passionate about printing and while I can’t say I had any career goals back in 1992, I can say with pride and certainty, that I have one heck of a career. The technology surrounding the art of printing is always changing, it is still exciting for those of us that grew up in the industry without ever having used a razor blade or piece of tape. I’m eager to be part of what’s around the next corner.
