After completing postdoctoral training at Sydney University as the inaugural Medical Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow (1988-91), Don established patch-clamp electrophysiology laboratories at St Vincent’s Hospital and the University of Technology, Sydney. He has authored more than 130 publications in scientific journals and a book on nanobiotechnology published by Springer, which is now translated into Russian and published by Nauchny Mir, Moscow. His an author on more than more than 17 patents, and is a co-founder of several startup companies in Australia and France, including 2 French startups that are commercialising medical diagnostic and therapeutic devices. Don initiated the formation of the Australian network in nanobiotechnology called OzNano2Life, which was funded in 2004 by the International Science Linkages program under the Australian Government’s innovation statement Backing Australia’s Ability. The OzNano2Life program funded 6 postdoctoral scientists to work at institutions across Australia, and provided the portal for structured exchange of scientists and information with European nanotechnology institutes. From 2003-2008 he was invited to speak on nanobiotechnology at The Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO) annual conferences. From 2003-2008 Don was an Executive Board Member of the Australian French Association for Science and Technology (AFAS NSW). In 2008 he was awarded a Chaire d’Excellence in nanosciences by the French government, and he is currently a full Professor (classe exceptionnelle) at the Université Grenoble Alpes. In 2024 he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant for the project Energion to conduct fundamental research in assembling smart nanostructured systems of artificial cells using combinations of proteins, biomolecules and lipids with synthetic materials. He currently is appointed as the Secretary-General for the European Biotechnology Thematic Network Association (EBTNA, http://www.ebtna.eu/menu/executivecommittee-200 ).
