My 2014 resolution is to concentrate on doing a few things that matter. One of those things is the effective education of all of our children. America has daunting challenges. However, education is a magnet of hope. It holds the promise to transform lives, alter alternatives, rebuild communities and sustain our way of life. We are in a global race. Each country’s “ship” is powered by the knowledge and productivity of its people. That knowledge and productivity are the "oars." Our educational institutions design and build the knowledge base and thereby seed future productivity. Far too many are without access to an oar.According to research by The Pell Institute regarding college students, “ After six years, only 11 percent of low-income, first-generation students had earned bachelor’s degrees compared to 55 percent of their more advantaged peers.” http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED504448.pdfMy experience encompasses seven industries, ten companies and a number of staff, managerial and executive positions. For the last three years my focus has been the financial health of public charter schools. That focus continues. Over a long career I have come to know that people matter most in every undertaking. They matter more than an organization’s location - the right people flourish anywhere. They matter more than a founder’s ideas - great people build on and expand ideas into concrete accomplishments. And they are more important than the tools of the trade - the ingenious and creative find or make the right tools.Now it’s time to find a few talented people interested in doing a few things that matter.
