Member - Pianc Working Group 215Accidental Impacts From Ships On Fixed Structures Sep 2019 - Dec 2023Brussels Area, BelgiumThe objective of the WG is to develop a guidance document for the assessment of ship impact on fixed structures in harbours and inland waterways, including but not limited to quay walls, bridges and bridge piers, offshore wind farms, and temporary structures (e.g. cofferdams). This will include suitable guidance for designers on acceptability criteria and methods to assess the likelihood of vessel impact as well as the corresponding energy and/or force.

MemberPianc Working Group 171 Oct 2014 - Dec 2021Brussels Area, BelgiumThe objectives of the Working Group will be to review, update and, where appropriate, expand on the report of Working Group 20 on “Capability of Ship Manoeuvring SimulationModels for Approach Channels and Fairways in Harbours”, Supplement to Bulletin N°77, of1992.The Working Group will focus on the recent developments in terms of technological progressfor simulators and experimental sensors, improved nautical tactics in harbours as well asprogress in psychological aspects concerning human factor. It is very likely that more detailedstudies (as a supplementary amendment) on single parts in the report may turn out to beworthwhile and will therefore be in the scope of the WG as well. The specialized matters that will be addressed do not have a direct connection with climatechange. Nevertheless Shiphandling Simulation will certainly be an excellent tool in the furtherfuture for addressing the effects of climate change impacts on navigation (e.g. due to windand waves).

Secretary GeneralUnited Kingdom Maritime Pilots' Association Nov 2015 - Dec 2020London, United KingdomAlthough a conservative profession in its approach as are many others, the dynamic nature of pilotage requires pilots to be conversant with and adapt to existing and future maritime technologies.

Course Director / Presenter - Elements Of PilotageM.I.C.E Global Pte Ltd Mar 2017 - Nov 2020SingaporeMarine Pilots and pilotage are an essential but often little understood principle element of the global maritime industry. Regardless of the legislation and local regulations under which they work almost all pilots are public servants, with responsibilities to ensure the safety of navigation within ports; thereby protecting port infrastructures, local marine and littoral environments, the safety of those living and working within the ports and its waterways. This all whilst ensuring and enhancing the commercial efficiency of the port. If you are an experienced mariner then some of the subjects covered within this 3 day course will be familiar whilst others may not. If you do not have an extensive maritime background then the variety of subjects addressed may come as a surprise. In accord with IMO resolution A960, the course will give you a broad knowledge and understanding of the underlying varied and often complex disciplines at the core of the maritime pilotage profession. This knowledge and theoretical training alone will not be enough to give the levels of expertise required to practise those skills. That can only be acquired through actual real life (“on the job”) experience along with specialised learning and practical training specific to the port environment the individual pilot works in. -

MemberPianc Working Group 178 Jan 2015 - Jan 2020Brussels Area, BelgiumThe aims of this Working Group would be to explore the range of climate change adaptation options for maritime and inland port and navigation infrastructure; to refer to the PIANC TG3 report on climate impacts (which is assumed to be subject to updating as necessary) indicating key regional differences as far as practicable; to collate and review other existing information on climate projections; to generate a toolbox of adaptation options including non-structural (management) as well as structural measures; to evaluate the effectiveness of different adaptation options in typical or generic climate change scenarios; to understand and address challenges; and to provide a guidance framework for decision making.

MemberPianc Wg49 Oct 2006 - 2014The objectives of the Working Group were to review, update and, where appropriate, expand on the design recommendations on vertical and horizontal dimensioning as presented in the Working Group 30 report of 1997 on approach channels. Recent developments in ship design, better understanding of ship manoeuvrability and behaviour in waves and further research in ship simulation and modelling required a comprehensive update to the 1997 report. This report published 20th January 2014 provides guidelines and recommendations for the design of vertical and horizontal dimensions of harbour approach channels and the manoeuvring and anchorage areas within harbours, along with defining restrictions to operations within a channel. It includes guidelines for establishing depth and width requirements, along with vertical bridge clearances. The report supersedes and replaces the joint PIANC-IAPH report ‘Approach Channels – A Guide for Design’ published in 1997 (PIANC MarCom Working Group 30) in cooperation with IAPH, IMPA and IALA. This report has been widely accepted worldwide by port designers. This new report has again been compiled in close co-operation with IAPH (International Association of Ports & Harbours), IMPA (International Maritime Pilots Association) and IALA (International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities).
