As Vice President, Risk Management, I manage the risk management department of PRMS, a national professional liability insurance program manager based in the Washington, DC Metro area. As a leader in psychiatric risk management, our goal is to prevent malpractice suits by managing risk proactively.Along with my team of legal and clinical experts, I educate psychiatrists and other healthcare providers on professional liability risk and how to manage that risk. Our Risk Management Consultation Service (RMCS) helpline has answered over 44,000 questions since 1997, helping doctors identify and prevent potential liability issues while ensuring patient safety. PRMS publishes a quarterly newsletter, Rx for Risk, featuring a variety of informative articles on a wide range of important risk management topics. Our risk managers are nationally recognized experts in psychiatric professional liability issues and, as such, are often asked to contribute articles to psychiatric and legal journals and publications as well as state psychiatric society newsletters. PRMS is ACCME accredited with commendation. The risk management team develops and presents in-person and online CME seminars. We are also frequent guest speakers at state, regional and national behavioral healthcare organizations on topics ranging from psychopharmacology and treating suicidal patients to the use of social media in a medical practice.I direct the outreach to residents and residency training director’s to provide the PRMS Residents’ Education Program (PREP) to trainees and Grand Round attendees . This program supports the ACGME core competencies of system-based practice and interpersonal and communication skills.
