I am truly passionate about creating quality software – it is what drives me. I started my journey in 1984 with BASIC on a Tandy MC-10. Two years later I got an IBM PC and began to learn how to develop software by writing a custom disk editor in x86 assembly based in part on code from Peter Norton’s assembly language book, creating a semi-customized OS with help from Andrew Tanenbaum, writing a simple role-playing game for OS/2, and starting (but unfortunately never finishing) a 3D interface for a custom BBS where virtual avatars could interact with the system and each other. I was a faithful subscriber to Dr. Dobbs Journal and loved using their diverse set of articles to explore the CS field, from homebrew C interpreters to generation-based garbage collectors, long before I was able to attend college.I enjoy reading as a way to broaden myself and inspire more creative solutions. Recent books have included Winning, The Art of War (which I reread at least once a year), Why Not?, The Pragmatic Programmer, How People Learn, Statistics Hacks, and Programming Collective Intelligence. I also make heavy use of the resources MSLibrary provides, especially Safari Books Online and GetAbstract.Today, I’m part of a team contributing design, code, and tests for software that affects literally millions of people on a daily basis. This ability to effect change on such a global scale both awes and humbles me; yet, at the same time it fuels my desire to never cease to challenge myself to accomplish more. My goal in life is simply to be the best person and the best professional I am capable of being.Specialties: Windows, .NET, SQL, AntiMalware, Software Test EE

Software Engineer, Sql Server Reporting ServicesMicrosoft Oct 2004 - Jan 2008Redmond, Washington, UsIn SQL Server 2005, I assumed ownership of the codebase that took the hierarchical representation of a report and reproduced it in HTML, PDF, EMF (for printing), and various other image representations. I also owned the GDI rendering portion of our WinForms control that ships with Visual Studio. For SQL Server 2008 (Rosetta v3) we rewrote a majority of our server code to accommodate several large new features and while doing so, we focused heavily on scalability. I owned revamping the architecture and creating the new translation engines for the PDF, printing, and image formats plus a client-side translator embedded into our WinForms control which was supports a future goal of end-user report editability. The result of my changes were a much higher level of code efficiency and reuse backed up by noticeable (currently ~20%+) performance and scalability gains. Alongside the new code was a suite of unit tests with verifiable code coverage of slightly more than 90%.For SQL Server 2008, I wrote the assembly used to measure and render text areas inside report composed of richly formatted text. For SQL Server 2005 and half of Katmai, I owned the performance testing infrastructure for Rosetta. This included designing and developing the main performance toolset, the back-end database and the reporting system plus driving runs and investigating bottlenecks to ensure the team knew where we stood in terms of performance and scalability. -
