Digital Content Producer
I create original digital content for WUSA9, the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C., the 6th largest media market in the country. Our stories and posts reach millions of people every week.On a daily basis, I use social listening tools (Crowdtangle, Chartbeat) to find and write compelling stories, but I'm always ready to pivot for breaking news at a moment's notice. I check to make sure there's fresh, interesting content on the station's homepage, and I schedule and create posts for about 600,000 followers across WUSA9's social platforms. I'm also the digital producer for WUSA9's non-traditional broadcast "Off Script with Bruce Johnson." I find trending stories and help the "Off Script" team turn them into interesting and engaging segments on air. I live-tweet during the broadcast and quickly turn the reactions into segments, so viewers can see we're listening in real time. After the show has ended, I create social posts to continue the conversation online. With my background in broadcast producing, I have become an on-air viewer engagement champion on the digital team. I help train newscast and digital producers on the best ways to use the tools we have to create a two-screen experience during the newscasts.
Producer
I produced the 7 p.m. newscast. I helped mold the newscast to better serve the intended audience-- the many locals who have long commutes and don't get home early enough to see the evening news. This newscast required me to be very self-sufficient. I found and wrote most of the content, relying little on produced pieces from reporters.I also worked on several special projects, including a live town hall called "Race: An Honest Conversation" for which I won a regional EMMY award.I also was the go-to producer to fill in on the 11 p.m. newscast.
Producer
I produced 1-hour newscasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I was responsible for choosing all of the content, writing and stacking it and making corresponding graphics. I also took the newscast into the booth and timed it out. Three days during the week I also produced two 1-hour newscasts.Another major responsibility was contacting and booking guests for weekend newscasts. I handled booking anywhere from 4-7 segments for each day. I produced each segment, requested video and built graphics as needed. I aimed to book guests who would really bring something to the table besides a blatant promotion for themselves. The guests I booked were making a difference in the community, educating viewers, or providing fun and visual tips with a take-away element.
Producer
I produced the Ozarks #1 newscast, KY3 News at 6. I also either helped produce the Noon newscast or solo produced the 9 p.m. Ozarks CW newscast on a daily basis.During my time at KY3, I helped increase the already incredible ratings.I won the Missouri Broadcasters Association's 2013 award for Best Newscast. I also earned a regional Emmy nomination in the Evening Newscast Category, plus a Silver award from the Society of Professional Journalist's KC Press Club branch.
Executive Producer
I managed content for the 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts and made sure branding was present and consistent. Working in the capital city of Missouri, we made sure politics was a consistent element in all newscasts.I ran the assignment desk, which included assigning reporters their stories, making phone calls, and handling breaking news with the resources available. I also contributed to KRCG’s website, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts by posting content and responding to viewers.Besides handling the newscasts, I took on a side project, a dog blog. It was called "Mid-Missouri Adventures with Milo.” Now that we've moved to Baltimore, it's simply "Adventures with Milo." Besides exploring the heart of Missouri and writing about our trips, I manage a corresponding Facebook page, which has a pretty good following. It's just another way for me to stretch my writing and social media skills.
Producer
At KSPR I got to do something not many people get to do, and I did it twice: launched two new newscasts, including hour-long news at 4 p.m.I gained extensive experience producing and covering severe weather newscasts and breaking weather situations. The Ozarks is known to be one of the most-turbulent weather areas in the US, which prompted me to become a Certified Storm Spotter.Working in a fairly small newsroom, I gained experience working the desk by helping reporters with story ideas, making calls on stories, and managing the daily flow of the newsroom. With that said, I gained the ability to wear many hats at once. Some of my most proud accomplishments didn't come from producing in the booth, but working on projects for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I was the content producer for KSPR from 2007 through 2012, which extended beyond my years working at the station. I produced the St. Jude Dream Home GIveaway 2-hour live telethon each year, helping raise more than $2,500,000.
Producer
This is where I learned the basics in newscast producing while attending the Missouri School of Journalism at Mizzou.I gained experience working every producing shift. I also field produced a Severe Weather Show and the 2006 Senate debate in Kansas City. After learning the basics in producing, I took on the role of Teaching Assistant for student producers. This teaching experience helped me learn how to guide new journalists in the field of TV news.During my time at KOMU, I also worked as an ENG operator, photojournalist, and reporter.
