Professor EmeritusThe John Marshall Law School Jan 2016 - PresentGreater Chicago AreaAs Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Center for Intellectual Property, Information and Privacy Law at The John Marshall Law School (Chicago), I continue to teach courses in intellectual property, free speech, cybersecurity, and law and technology at John Marshal. I also teach courses abroad in international aspects of intellectual property, including trade and sustainable development, most recently in Australia and the Czech Republic. I continue to lecture in the areas of intellectual property, international art, e-commerce, media, culture, traditional knowledge, technology, information security, innovation policy, and cyberspace at conferences throughout the United States and abroad, and have done so in over 38 countries, on six continents, during my professional career. -
Professor Of LawThe John Marshall Law School Aug 1994 - Dec 2015As a full-time member of the faculty , I taught courses across the spectrum of intellectual property at both the J.D. and graduate level; creating eight courses, including Globalization, Intellectual Property and the Internet; Intellectual Property, Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples; and Intellectual Property and Information Security; and supervised diverse independent study papers, graduate theses and dissertations. I taught in 9 countries, including as a Fulbright Professor in Shanghai China in 1998. I have been awarded US Speaker and Specialist Grants in connection with capacity building activities in diverse countries, including Chile, Russia, China, Macedonia, Jamaica, Ukraine, Barbados, India, Guinea (West Africa), Paraguay, Panama, Brazil, Nepal, Dominican Republic, Peru, and Nicaragua from 1999-2009. I have authored or co-authored 14 textbooks, including the first International Intellectual Property text book ever published in the United States (in 1996 by Westlaw); created online curriculum for 5 courses, including IP Digital and Law & Technology; written 52 articles, 7 book chapters, 62 columns, 38 conference publications and 37 scholarly papers, focusing on international intellectual property law and its intersections with trade, culture, and information security and have also given over 313 lectures in 34 countries on six continents, including lectures in Spanish and French. -
Director, Center For Intellectual Property, Information And Privacy LawThe John Marshall Law School Oct 2012 - Oct 2015Chicago, IlI supervised four graduate level programs in Intellectual Property and Information Technology and Privacy, 2 LLMs and 2 Masters of Science Programs. These included two fully online degrees in intellectual property. I also supervised the creation of two fully online degrees in information technology and privacy, which were expected to become fully operational in 2016. I established the first Trademark Clinic in the school’s history and also worked closely with our special training program with the State Intellectual Property Office of China so that John Marshall could maintain its 20-year program. I oversaw the successful combination of Center for Intellectual Property Law with Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law and, during my tenure, organized and conducted over 20 conferences, panel discussions and speaker programs. Among the conference topics were: Trade Secrets in Asia and the United States, IP on the Edge, When World’s Collide: Emerging Intersections in Privacy, Information Access and Intellectual Property, IP Protection in BRICS, European Patent Seminars and Climate Change: The Science for Lawyers. My first year as Director, our US News rankings raised from 17th to 12th in the country for our IP program, which ranking I maintained despite severe budget and staff cuts. -
Screenwriter/ProducerVeraken Productions Jan 2016 - PresentGreater Chicago AreaI currently have seven cinematographic, theatrical, literary and video projects under development. I am responsible for supervising the hiring of the director, cast and crew; overseeing production and post-production; and supervising initial marketing of the projects under her supervision. I help locate funding and investment sources for these projects and seek national and international distribution deals, as appropriate. I also serve as a screenwriter/author on diverse projects as needed.
