My goal as a Software Architect at DR is to help overcome the challenges involved with replacing a decade old monolithic Content Management System (Microsoft CMS), by migrating into a Drupal 7 solution for managing article content. Because Drupal 7 is also considered a monolithic application, several measures have been taken to appropriately address this.All non-article content is handled externally by either implementing these as separate Web Applications (as is for instance the case for www.dr.dk/tv), or by allowing Drupal to present and site build these types of content by embedding them using ESI or an equivalent approach.A strict point of the architectural work is to, for several reasons, avoid dependence on Drupal as the primary system for generating HTML content; the most prominent of which being to make it possible to replace Drupal and to embrace support for devices incapable of displaying HTMLThere are several technologies in play to do this, the most note worthy being ASP.NET MVC and WebAPI, node.js and PHP.To ensure performance during heavy load during TV Events such as the Eurovision Song Contest and Election coverage, it's an area of focus to migrate the previous timed-cache solutions to Write-through cache, where updates trigger appropriate cascade cache updates in the implicated applications. On an application level, these are often memcached and In-memory cache. All edge cache for HTTP content handled using Varnish.These approaches ensure that updates are available quickly, while still ensuring a high throughput.
