Engineer Manager
Leader of the engineering staff at Escanaba Mill. Engineering staff responsibility includes overall responsibility for capital planning, project management and engineering assistance work done throughout the mill. These efforts included new PCC Plant, New Air Flotation on E3 Coater, Stabilization of #1 White Liquor Clarifier, and other large projects.At the same time, Leader of the Process Control group at Escanaba Mill. This group is responsible for the DCS, QCS, and PLC systems throughout the mill. This includes capital projects as well as day to day improvements on the technology being used.Additional responsibilities include strategic planning for the mill. This effort as lead to a focus on the E3 Paper Machine, Kraft and RMP pulping operations, and the Effluent Treatment Plant. These efforts are in their infancy but include:• Complete appropriations grade study for the E3 Quality Improvement Rebuild Project. This is a $110MM project waiting.• RMP system revamp for short term gains in quality and control.• RMP system modernization for production and more importantly a major improvement in thepulp quality to achieve a hardwood kraft substitute.• Kraft mill quality and production improvement to achieve modern quality standards of brightness. At the same time satisfy future production needs.• Effluent treatment plant improvement to reduce costs and insure future operational capabilities.Additional responsibilities include keeping track of the Escanaba Paper Company land ownership and purchases, resource for engineering and technical questions particularly in the area of fiber and coating, and involved in various mill efforts (Lean 6σ, ME, EOC, etc.).

Engineering staff responsibility includes overall responsibility for capital planning, project management and engineering assistance work done throughout the mill. These efforts included two new sheeters, a capacity rebuild on #14 PM, new Speedsizer on #16 PM and other large projects.Additional responsibilities include strategic planning for the mill. This effort as lead to several major projects that have the potential of reinventing the mill and taking the mill into new directs. These projects include:o Project Troy – Joint venture with using a proprietary process. o Project Independence – The $125MM Biomass to Liquid Fuels Plant project received a $50 MM DOE grant and was developed up to the point of a feasibility study. This project showed great promise and was being fast tracked by the DOE until NewPage Corporation went into restructuring. While a third party was found to pick the project up, it was decided at NewPage Corporation not to pursue this effort.o ARRA Funding – Wisconsin Rapids Mill working with Focus on Energy, successfully received ARRA funds for a cleaner system replacement on #14 PM that had a large +300 kW power reduction. This project was successfully installed and is meeting our operating goals.o Several projects are in development. These include: o Soap conversion to Biodiesel.o Turpentine productiono Industrial Boiler MACT optionsAdditional responsibilities include keeping track of the Wisconsin Rapids Mill land ownership and purchases, resource for engineering and technical questions particularly in the area of fiber and coating, and involved in various mill efforts (Lean 6σ, NORI, EOC, etc.).Part of the team that restructured the fiber supply balance for NewPage Corporation.
Investment And It Manager
Leader of the engineering staff and IT staff at Wisconsin Rapids Mill. Engineering staff responsibility includes overall responsibility for capital planning, project management and engineering assistance work done throughout the mill. IT leadership includes overall responsibility for all business related IT functions in the mill including order planning, fulfillment, warehousing and process information network. Additional responsibilities include strategic planning for the mill. This effort as lead to several major projects that have the potential of reinventing the mill and taking the mill into new directs. I serve as Project Manager for each of these projects. These projects include:o Pulpmill Modernization Project o Ethanol Plant o Biomass to Liquid Fuels Plant – A consortium of companies has been brought together to develop a demonstration project for taking woody biomass and converting it to liquid fuels. This process uses new, innovative technologies to accomplish this conversion. The consortium is seeking funding from the United States Department of Energy to help bring the demonstration plant. The application for this demonstration facility has been submitted to DOE.o Natural Gas Elimination – This project consists of using innovative biomass gasification technology to generate synthesis gas that can be used to replace natural gas in the lime kiln. This technology is being developed in Canada and we look to install it at Wisconsin Rapids Mill. While feasible, the economics were not strong enough to pursue at this time.Additional responsibilities include the Fiber Category Team Leader. This team manages the fiber purchases for Stora Enso North American Region. This represents 500,000 ADMT/yr of fiber purchases from United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland. This balance supplies the 7 mills in Stora Enso North American Region.During this time I served on several M&A project teams.
