I did most of my teaching in New Zealand apart from a year's teaching at James Gillespie's Boys' School, Edinburgh, Scotland and Ruamrudee International School, Bangkok. As a New Zealand trained primary/elementary school teacher, I taught in many schools both in the North and South Islands. I taught at all levels from New Entrant - Year/Grade 8. I also had one year as a special needs teacher. Most of my service was in senior management positions - deputy/assistant principal and principal of a number of schools in NZ. As a teacher mostly in the upper levels of the primary and intermediate school situations, in 2001 my wife and I moved to Bangkok to teach in a large, reputable international school. It was here that I had my most exciting, challenging, enjoyable and rewarding set of teaching experiences, teaching Grade One, 5, 6, 7, year old students drawn from many different nationalities. It was very hard work but it gave me a great appreciation of the work that is done and the effort that is provided by particularly our Year One and Two teachers in establishing the sound basis for the future education of our young people. Given that ensuing learning situations and teachers are performing and presenting to the highest educational standards, learning success is assured. While at RIS, I was asked to take on the job as the interim principal of the Elementary section of the school 2003 - 2004 - 500+ students and over 70 teachers and staff. That was interesting!
