Working as a contractor at OCLC:• Moved FirstSearch, their premiere product, from an IBM 3090 mainframe to the AIX platform.• I designed and implemented a shared memory resource manager on a AIX UNIX system in C to make FirstSearch retrieve holdings information for library books within SLA.• Assisted in the design and implementation of many new features for FirstSearch• Supported and maintained the older Epic system until retirement. I handled the retirement of the system, coordinating the effort.

While consulting at Nationwide Insurance:I implemented a machine independent version control system using expert system technologieswith Oracle forms as the user interface and database to drive C and shell code to compile and install packages. I also designed and prototyped an unemployment tax grouping system using expert system technologies.While I was on the bench, I was asked to test a retail system our company had written to familiarize myself with it then I wrote up the user documentation including step by step instructions on all of its functions.

Wrote a Laboratory Information Management System, a Hazardous Waste tracking system, a Truck Dispatching system, an Inventory system and a Personnel data system on an HP UNIX machine. Performed all UNIX systems management tasks including new release installs, troubleshooting and performance tuning the O/S. I also performed all Oracle database administration tasks from installing Oracle, designing the databases down to their table/index layout on the disk drives.An interesting story about this job was when I had to restore the Oracle database after a critical data disk drive crashed using the backup tapes. It was an all night job that required my expertise, so I decided to write a script of everything I did for review later. In the early morning I had two tapes to go and the system would be ready, so I passed it off to the other junior administrator.I got home (two country blocks away) and received a phone call from the operator that something had gone wrong and the administrator had left. I went back in and realized he had mounted the wrong tape and had overwritten the data, making it useless. I wiped the whole system (to the horrified looks of the managers) and restarted the install using the audit script I had written with instructions to the operator to mount the tapes requested by the system and went back home for some sleep. I returned in time to see the last tape mounted and then watched the system start up with the usual morning printouts for the lab personnel and truck dispatching.
