I was an academic / faculty member, with research interests in data science and analytics, and extensive experience in leading projects in analytics, online systems development, and organisational change. I was lucky enough to work on a wide range of projects across and beyond the university. In terms of subjects they’ve covered most areas, including education at all levels, medicine and healthcare, physical and biological sciences, computer science, construction, art history, classics, economics, engineering, law, mathematics, music, and religious studies. They ranged from taking up a couple of hours of my time to multimillion international collaborations.I was particularly interested in learning analytics: using the traces learners leave behind to improve their learning. My career has enabled me to explore the affordances of new and advanced technologies, particularly in the area of learning and education, but also in healthcare and medicine, science, engineering, and a range of more social sciences. My interests included online learning, open educational resources (OER); the boundary between informal and HE learning; mobile devices, mobile learners and mobile learning; virtual learning environments (VLE/CMS); learning technology standards; metadata; e-learning systems; educational multimedia; knowledge management and sharing; accessibility; usability; and student learning. I have very broad interests in most areas of learning and understanding, including personal ones in economics, law, policy, philosophy, politics, wine, and aviation. (Not all at the same time.)
